BUYING INTO A PRIVATE BLOG NETWORK - FORGET IT OR RISK IT?.

Private blog networks are supposed to be all the rage at the moment (Sept 2015) and have been through ups and downs for a few years now.  Here I take a look into the concept of using such a so-called private network of blogs primarily for the purpose of attaining links to your websites.

Well lets consider, what exactly is a Private Blog Network - otherwise known as a PBN.

Firstly, if you know of a Private Blog Network, either through some stupid sales page you get in your email spam, a fiverr gig or a blackhat type forum, then let me tell you something - FORGET THE WORD PRIVATE.  That network is not private, its public, very public, and should from that point onwards be known only as a Blog Network.  The fact that it may be owned privately has absolutely nothing to do with the definition here - of course its owned privately, do you think its publicly owned by the state????

Just consider what I have said above - and think about it very carefully.  I cannot stress enough how important this is.  There is a HUGE difference in a private blog network and a blog network - make no mistake about this.  There is no such thing as a private blog network which you know about - unless you own it.

To continue, now that you know in brief what private means, learn as quickly as you can that if it is private - then you will have never heard of it and possibly (but this is not guaranteed) never will and therefore by definition through zero knowledge of it, you will not be able to use it.  Period.

In other words, the private blog networks out there which you know nothing of are of no use, and never will be.

So what about PBN's which you DO know about?

Well - these Blog Networks - as we have established they are actually called - are out there in force, there are thousands of them.  You can get links on them for very little money - and for a while - the links may actually boost your serp ranking.

But beware - google watches these things, and will utterly decimate any they come to dislike for whatever their reasoning.  What does this mean for you?

Well - let me explain.  If you have a great site and it has links from a blog network, then you can expect it to lose its ranking once google locate and address the network.  I know of websites which have had links from networks in the past and these have been discovered, not only did the network get hit and dropped, the sites it linked to (possibly deemed therefore as having purchased links) also got hit - and NEVER CAME BACK.  So this is a risk you can choose to either take or avoid.

Varying levels of Privacy with Networks

It can be stated or claimed that there is different levels of privacy when it comes to the networks.  This is not true - it is either private or public - one or the other.  What IS true however is the probability that the less effort which goes into the marketing of a blog network, the less likely google is to be able to track it down and hammer it.  So from a perspective of considering risk, it could be said that a hive of activity online which promotes blogs for the sole purpose of selling links could, in theory, attract attention from any search engine wanting to destroy the signal strength of links coming from such domains.

How easy would this be?  Well from my personal perspective, I could wipe off the face of this planet hundreds of networks within a matter of weeks.  This is pretty much down to the fact I'm a programmer, so I have a fair understanding of what would be required.  I could simply visit the hubs of sellers, purchase links and write crawlers - I wouldn't care about throwing out the baby with the bathwater although I would code in tolerances.  Now consider what a couple of hundred PHD computer scientists could do when instructed by their bosses!

So should I use links from a Private blog network or not?

Well I personally would not - firstly remember it's not private if you know about it anyway - so if the network becomes a target, your'e a target too.  Some people claim that for a quick win on a throw away domain its worth it - this is probably true to a major extent, so it is a consideration in certain circumstances - I mean lets face it, at the end of the day if there is a fad going on with loads of competition, search engines aren't going to fall over themselves to make your life any easier and they can be that slow at getting new domains up and running due to their demands for links - the networks are a viable option.  This is the chicken and egg.  The engines ramble on about getting links - but lets be honest, getting links to a new site is almost impossible these days so if its a daft short term project - and your site is good for users, why would anyone want to punish it?

Well at the end of the day, these are my own views on the current state of PBN's - I hope you can take something away from this and apply it usefully to your own predicament!
