GOOGLE UPDATE DECEMBER 14TH 15TH 2015

Whilst the reset of the world appears to be half asleep, I have been watching my traffic stats throughout the month of December 2015 and have noticed some very interesting (and typically sad) drops in traffic around the 14th or 15th of December.

Now most of my real traffic comes from google - which is the case for many site owners - so when something happens on volume of hits then it is most likely down to them doing some kind of update or other.  Generally speaking - updates kill traffic in my experience - I don't know why and I don't really care, but google updates are generally bad for me.  Maybe its because i'm not a huge corporate bully brand - who knows.

Anyway, I am not complaining about an update which has affected one site - no - I have stats from various websites which generally show quite a heavy downturn in traffic across the board, with one exception of a very very slight gain.  See below.

Google Update - December 2015 - Traffic Drop 1

Here are my stats from one domain - look carefully at the drop starting dec 15th.  Its there - and there is no doubting it, or is there?  I have to admit that it isn't a huge impact and most people would probably not notice it.  I decided to dig a little deeper to see if there had been an update by google on or around the 15th december.  There was nothing on any of the usual sites.  Notice, it does climb out by the 24th - however it is Christmas day today, so I will have to update later (at the end of the month probably) to see how it has affected the site longer term.

Update 15th December 2015

On another domain, I saw a huge spike in traffic which quickly died on the 15th / 16th.  Is this a google update?  I am still not totally convinced, I may have stuck an IP block on the host due to the large number of page requests.  But........ even so - even with this block in place you can see that traffic has not been at normal levels since the that point on the graph.

Update from google on December 14th causes more traffic.

Now lets be honest about this, not all google updates or whatever you want to call them are bad.  Again, around the same date, we see a sudden increase on this domain (small but definite) and roughly we are looking at a 30% increase which as a percentage IS actually quite substantial.  Rather than the growth though - what I found most interesting was this date cropping up again.  Could this be some kind of core algorythm change at google?

My fourth domain incurred another drop in traffic - again on the same date.  This is quite subtle both as a proportion of the whole and actual numbers of its.  I have drawn a red line to show the difference though, and there is absolutely no doubt that the site was hit - yet again on the same date as the other domains.

Traffic Drop from suspected update.

My fifth domain seems to have been possibly attacked a little earlier, however, the levels on the the days just preceeding the 14th are not unheard of - and we must consider this as we study the levels post 14th/15th.  Look at the state of that - the traffic has been slaughtered.  The upsetting this about this kind of attack on a website is that this is a free site giving out free information and help on an educational topic of sorts.  Nothing commercial - just a heavy smack around the face for a nice little website which just ticks along helping people out.  If there is an update - this is a particularily nasty and cruel update which is actually quite sick in terms of the effects its had - pretty much across the board.

So did Google Update the Algo Around December 14th or 15th in 2015?

Well, looking at the stats from the different domains above, which are mixed up all over the world on different hosts and are on different topics, it certainly seems like there was an update.  And if so, it was a very nasty little pig aswell.  There is no spam on these domains, they are mainly free sites giving stuff away and there is one commercial site which actually just gets ripped off by everyone its so good (naturally google are allowing the copy sites to out rank mine aswell - which is something I have come to expect from them due to their  reliance on so many ridiculous ranking indicators).

Yet having said the above, I am still not entirely convinced there was an update, but the only reason for my sceptisim is the fact that there is little or no information on the usual websites which I can correlate with.

In summary, I suspect you have to see if you can relate the stats above (awstats) with your own traffic levels for the period and make up your own mind about it.  If there IS a match, I would love to hear from you.  Fire me over an email.
