Does a Wikipedia Backlink Help with SEO?.

Oh here we go.  Those spammy backlink offers you see all over the show promising the earth and delivering nothing.  Well I found a service which reports to post your link on Wikipedia and thought I would give it a try.

Two issues here that I can see (at least two).

a) IF I send this guy my URL to insert into wikipedia, he may well be able to do it so far as provide the actual insertion "service" - if thats what you want to call it.  But the problem is "will it stick".  I have had links in the wikipedia before and they have not stayed for very long before some over zealous editor comes along and decides it shouldn't be there.  I mean - why should wikipedia help site owners - its not like websites have LINKED TO THEM IN THE PAST IS IT?  Duh?  And that is the problem with the internet - sites hate linking to you but are more than prepared to accept links.  The imbalance is unreal.

b) The second thought is this - assuming it sticks this link - will it have any SEO effect on the page it links to?

Here is the wikipedia link case study then.

Absolute exact match 3 word domain.
Registered in 2015 about 3 months ago - was previously registered but I have no interest in its past activity beyond saying nothing bad has happened to it - its fine..
Current SERP position for its 3 word phrase is 10 - (page 1 position 10)
Current SERP position for a 2 word more competetive phrase is 96 (page 10 position 6)
The second serp position at 96 is for the first two words of the 3 word domain.

Will a wikipedia link give us a boost?

This domain is a review site for a product used by hobbyists.  What I did was put pictures on it of each of the different types of item within the category and then write a review on each one.  Inside the site is also a comprehensive set of instructions of how to acheive the best results whilst performing this hobby using the things I review.

It has been given a few links over the last couple of months but is steady now and settled in place - there have been no changes to the actual pages for around 2 months.  The metrics above are from ahrefs.  So you can see - a weak site but actually sitting quite pretty as it were at position 10 for its three word exact match phrase.

So much for exact match penalties eh?  What a croc that is - although they may have been slightly devalued.

Sent in the request to the provider of the wikipedia link.  Naturally this phase in itself is fraught with problems - the guy could be a complete idiot for all I know - or he may just reject the site or ask me to do some more work on it first.  Well see.  For my reference (see file c:\work\imtest7.txt for my keywords).

24/Oct/2015

As is always the case with IM - there are loads of fake people and idiots out there.  The link provider I was going to use has magically disappeared from the planet before I had chance to place the order.  So I have had to go out and find another.  In this time I have met yet another con artist - so thats two con merchants on this project alone in just 2 days!

I have found another provider though, and bear in mind this project is not a spamming project so the wiki entry really will be valuable for wikipedia - as I am a 12 year expert in this particular hobby.

01/Nov/2015

Ok - the link is up today - the google cache date on the wikipedia page is 27/October - the positions of the target are as they were - so this is a spot on test.  Once the cache is updated I will let you know.  Then I will keep you informed of serp positions.

02/Nov/2015

The link is cached now - it actually got picked up shortly after the update from yesterday.
The three word phrase is still at pos 10
The two word phrase is up from 96 to 87

I would say that this link is currently not effective - its early days though - if it sticks of course.  The movement on the two worder is probably not related - just typical google shuffling things round a bit.

04/Nov/2015

Ok, today it is at pos 9 (page 1 pos 9) for the three word phrase,
and pos 87 (page 9 pos 7) for the two words.

19/Nov/2015

Site now back at 10 where it started for the three word phrase.
Site UP to 69 (page 7 pos 9) for the two word phrase.

This trial /case study was a very very minor success.  The link is still held on Wikipedia (I will check it often to see if it gets removed).
You can take this to the bank.  :)  Up 27 spots for 2 word, Up 0 spots for 3 word.

Project Completed - but will maintain checking on the link to see if it stays.
