Using Dripapps WordPress (WP) SEO Theme - Review and Case Study

I have wanted to to case study a THEME rather than a PLUGGIN on wordpress for quite a while now - here is how things turned out.

I came across the Dripapps WP theme which is geared for SEO the other day whilst I was just browsing through Facebook.  The advert which appeared was a sponsored post.  At the time I was on my tablet, so I shared the the post to my timeline so I could get hold of a screen dump and show you what I am talking about.

A quick note on this ad - it appears to be honest in my view and isn't saturated with the usual guff and false claims - note the word "help" - it says "Wordpress Theme Can Help Rank" - not - "we can rank any site guaranteed and you're a muppet" and that sort of garbage ;)

Dripapps FB ad for wp SEO theme.

(Above - the DripApps advertising I became interested in on FB)

Now this is quite good timing for me actually, because I am looking to build a site in the health niche and have just made a purchase of a stunning PLR pack from Ruth Pound who is selling over at JVZoo.  The pack contains articles, photos, PDF's, Word Docs, Forms - all sorts of what I would easily class as great material for a start-up website, which when completed could contain around 30 pages.  Not bad for a new site to get it kickstarted.  There are even sheets in there which users can print out and use to monitor their progress with the health plan.

The source of the informatio for the review.

(Above - the PLR pack is no cheap rubbish.  It has not been published at this time - the documents are NOT indexed in google and the photo's are excellent quality and on topic - perfect for a case study or review of this Dripapps theme.)

Where Shall I Place this New Website with the DripApps SEO Wordpress Theme?

I have a small dilema here, I could go off and register and expired domain with some half decent metrics, or, I could register a brand new domain and use this SEO theme with some risk attached.

I decided that a good way of potraying an honest and up-front method of site creation (which this should really be) and showing how well or badly the site does in terms of SEO, would be to register a brand new domain.  This way, you the reader, can do the same without embroiling yourself in the realms of scammers selling you domains with manipulated metrics.

At the end of the day, this is a case study of the WP theme really - and not a case study which I want affected by the additional inclusion of potential site strength (or weakness) incurred when expired domains are thrown into the equation.

Choosing my Target Topic (keywords in otherwords) for the Site.

The content is extremely detailed and heavily themed around the concept of healthy eating.  It is important that I choose some keyords which are realistically - shall we say "rankable"?  Again - this is a case study/review, and it would be innacurate and completely unfair to choose words for which I have not got a cat in hells chance of ranking for - ever.

Here are the google adwords totals for my chosen main keywords (at root level - IE what I want the ROOT page to rank for).  Notice that I am going for a very very low target, as this is a new domain.  I have also registered the domain - theEXACT MATCH.com.  Shame about having to get the one with "the" at the front - but the other was gone.

It looks like this.  the10word1word2word3word4 . com - where ten is actually a number (digits) within the domain.  Quite a long name - but EXACTLY what the content is about - so why not?

The phrase has 1000 searches per month according to adwords tools (keyword planner) - and is listed as Low competition and there is also no price shown against the term in the "suggested bid" column.  So looking good.

Ok - next step is hosting.  A cheapo hosting company is fine for this - the sort that allows multiple domains to be hosted as "add on" domains.  I have a few of these knocking about and normally pay about $5 per month for them.  My preference is a company which uses Cpanel to maintain and administor the domains and SQL databases - I just find it really easy and consistent across companies.

The target market for this is the USA - so in this case - I will be hosting it on a USA based host.

This process is simply a case of adding in the domain, modifying the DNS at the registrar (normally first), Installing wordpress, Installing this theme, then adding the data.  Takes about a day - the data part is by far most time consuming part of that.  The PLR pack needs re-structuring and re-formatting to be more web friendly and distributed in a useful manner that the users understand.

Quick interlude here - PLR packs are often used fairly heavily - how often depends very much on the popularity of the niche, and also the seller ability to attain reach.  I have to be FAST here because the content may get duplicated, but if I am "up first" - then in theory, the ones coming in later will be seen as the duplicates and not me.

Once the theme is uploaded, it is important to check the code for any outbound links the vendor has put into it.  Not all vendors of themes are sneaky, some are though and its worth having a good poke around to make sure they don't link anywhere else from their theme.  Here's how the Dripapps theme looks after first installing it.

The Raw Wordpress Installion of DripApps Theme

Rather a sad update here - there were problems with the template.

First of all, when editing text to add pages and posts, images could not be inserted.  I could add them to the media library, but when I selected them to "insert into post" - nothing happened.  This is a joke.  I have never come across this sort of shiz before with wordpress themes - although I DO know it happens.  I spent around half an hour searching round for a problem, and resolved it by actually changing the source code in the config file for WP.

THIS IS NOT SOMETHING YOU NEED TO BE WASTING TIME WITH IN IM - I CAN ASSURE YOU.

Here is the line of code I had to insert.

define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false );
infront of the the require_once instruction.

Who knows where the problem lies but that sorted it.  Maybe its a version of wordpress compatibility issue.  I don't know - either way it cost me time and was frustrating.

THEN ON TOP OF THIS.

I deleted the slideshow entries as I wanted to insert my own relevant images rather than the ones used in the template - fairly standard.  But no matter what I did, I SIMPLY COULD NOT get my images to show in the blog.  I even tried putting the supplied images back in but nothing worked - all I could see was a black box where the images should be.  This below is the configuration screen.  This cost me a shocking TWO HOURS of messing around and time wasting.

I simply could not get dripapps slideshow to work.

IN THE END - HAVING LOST ABOUT 3 HOURS OF TIME - I GAVE UP ON THE DRIPAPPS SEO TEMPLATE.

NOT TO WORRY - THIS IS NOT OVER.  I SIMPLY SWITCHED OUT THE THEME TO A STANDARD WORDPRESS TWENTY 15 AND CREATED ALL MY PAGES - THE ENTIRE SITE WAS UP AND RUNNING IN LESS THAN 45 MINUTES - EXACTLY HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE.

The problem though is that I now need an SEO theme again.

But for now - I will let the site get crawled as it is - measure the rankings and if they are no good - I will switch to a different SEO theme and test to see whether the content moves in position as an effect of changing over.  I have decided to leave this up primarily because there is still a very viable trial here, some fantastic content, a new domain and plenty to go at.  It is just that the Dripapps theme hasn't worked out - and in a way - showing this and how time was wasted is.....................

EXACTLY WHAT IMJOURNEY IS ALL ABOUT   !!!

26/Nov/2015

New domain registered, SEO theme abandoned, Twenty Fifteen replaced it, Content added, External Link to root added.  Waiting crawl.

13/Dec/2015

Ok - the project is now more related to monitoring a sites progress when filled with PLR information and an exact match.  I wouldn't bother with that theme again.

I am now ending this as a fail - because the theme did not work.  So I now have a nice domain with plenty of data on it under another theme to perform other tests on.

TRIAL FAILED - DRIPAPPS SEO THEME HAD PROBLEMS.  DOMAIN USEFUL FOR OTHER TRIALS.
