Buying Expired Domains for Link Juice, DA, PA and the Dangers..

So, there you are with a nice new website, it IS genuine, it DOES look great, it DOES help people out, it IS very useful.  So what?  Do you really think google is going to rank it highly right away?  Not a cat in hells chance.  The odds are that it won't be unique - how can it be with an entire planet out there doing similar things?  Lets take a look at some of the pitfalls we are up against here.

You are selling something which is already being sold online.  But you are nearer your market than other sellers (but lets face it - who cares about that for mail order goods - who even checks?)  Be real, people order from China to save a few bucks rather than deal with a local startup nobody has ever heard of.  Whatever, you give your website a name called "weselltshirtsgreat dot com" and set it up with all the very best gear you can get your hands on to stock.  You've got the cheapest prices, the greatest range, the fastest delivery in North America and 24 hour support (for those face pain customers you'd rather see jump in a red hot tar pit than make a sale to!).

You are now all ready to rock n roll.  So you check and lo and behold no pillock ever searches for "weselltshirtsgreat", and your branded products sitting pretty on sub-pages aren't going to outrank the amazon junk are they?  Afterall, we all know google loves to put amazon all over the serps when theres a product match - at the expense of many small businesses who can actually be bothered going to the trouble of creating a website rather than just sticking some shoddy ad on the amazon platform.

But theres nothing you can do about that, because the only way we know is to boost your websites DA/PA or whatever else google looks at these days and try to outrank the other sellers.  Oh - wait a minute I hear you say - lets do that then - lets get some trust flow and rank power to my site.  Ahhh - and off you go to do your sweaty "reachout" in the desperate hope some mug will link to your site with a dofollow a href link - for nothing of course, because they, as your competitors are just dying to help you aren't they and god and the good lord forbid you should get caught actually PAYING for a link - google may really hurt you if they find out.

After spending months doing your reacharound - err sorry reachout, you have realised that nobody links to you - despite having a fantastic site - which isn't an issue and is not debateable.  Quick correction, you did get a link - it was from some mom and pop blog site with nothing to do with t-shirts, they wanted a free shirt from you aswell, and even though they reassured you you were going to get a dofollow - they don't even know what that is, and ended up putting your link on a NOINDEXED page with a nofollow attribute and then "forgot" to even link to that page from their main page or anywhere else.  (Not un-typical of reacharound tactics).

Now you have discovered that reacharound is a joke - you are left with a couple of options to help get your little site up a bit in the google serp.  You can (hold your breath here) - if you want (hold a bit longer) - ***BUY SOME EXPIRED DOMAINS***!!!

Oohhhh I hear you say - that its against the google TOS isn't it?  I don't know actually - and I really don't care, because I don't do it.  But - what if YOU want to go and try it for yourself?

Well - you can, there are lots of places online where you can buy expired domains from, but bear in mind, before you go off and do so - have a read of the following which is my view of how easy it is for me to catch you out, if I was a search engine of course.

If domain expired - no follow all links (from it - in the background) for 5 years.  Yup.  Thats one way of doing you in.  No more juice passed to your other domains from this one for 5 years.  An arbitrary figure.  Doesn't effect the domains ranking in terms of its own position in the serp, but heck - who wants to rank for some cruddy old concept domain previously owned by some pedantic blogger going on about bike wheels anyway?  lol.

If domain expired - demote all sites it links to by 10 places.  Yup - if I were a software engineer at a search engine - this could well be a good quick and dirty way of hammering your other sites down.  Naturally I have no way of knowing if google does this, and they probably don't because there would be collateral damage, but just something for you to worry about as there could well be subtle variants on this out there.

If domain expired - and it links to another expired domain - hammer them both.

Honestly - the list is endless and buying expired domains is a minefield - if not right now - it could be in the future, and I read an article online that speculated as to whether google was using expired domains as a way of hunting down the PBN owners.  Something to think about for certain.

Now you will hear the sellers of expired domains ranting about how google can't do this, and google can't do that - well google can do what the hell they like.

My thoughts are that it is very dangerous to buy expired domains and use them for linking.
