How to Make Money as an Amazon Affiliate.

Amazon Beginners Crash Course Money Making System

This project is one which lies fairly close to my heart.  No kidding.  The reason for this, is that I operate a number of commercial websites selling consumer goods.  These are goods I buy in, carry stock, take orders and dispatch.  Following this, where required, I provide customer support personally, typically answering things like "how to" "how do I" "this won't work" etc.

Over the last few years, the public has been increasingly drawn towards Amazon and away from niche websites which specialize in a given product type or range.  Along with this rapidly increasing trend away from niche sites (and don't get me wrong - this doesn't apply to all niches) it appears that google likes to rank amazon sales pages above the niche business pages.

This is grotesquely destructive and (I feel) unfair on niche site owners.  Why?  Well, I have worked for four years on my product sites, trying to build a brand, credibility, trust, word of mouth, customer base - you know, all the things a strong business needs to operate to a reasonable level of success.  Then, along comes some idiot importer, who has no real idea of customer service, product technicalities etc.  What do they do?  They slap a page up on Amazon, reduce the price (afterall they couldn't care less about after sales service really (in many cases)) and within no time at all, google picks up the page (which largely often just consists of copied and pasted descriptions from badly written factory blurb).  What does google do with the page?  It shoves it straight up to the top of the serp - slamming down the niche websites which have been around for years.

It appears to me that the public trust Amazon more than anything else on the internet.  Half of the buyers probably don't even know that they are purchasing from people tucked away in their bedroom rather than a specialist, they are polarised by the Amazon Brand.  Imagine them (buyers) - they have their eyes wide open with red and white spirals turning round - they are hypnotised and see nothing beyond the brand.

Without actually selling on the amazon store, I cannot take advantage of naturally and easily attainable high google rankings of amazon pages.  Nope - that isn't an option but I CAN take advantage of their brand name and public trust.

So, in actual fact, I am not looking to sell my own niche products on Amazon, I am looking (with this project) to become an affiliate of Amazon and have a go at seeing if I can make a commission on some of their products based around existing (and climbing) trust.

ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING I do on this project is based around information found in the document I purchased called "Amazon Beginners Crash Course Money Making System".

PROJECT PROGRESS REPORT "Amazon Beginners Crash Course Money Making System".

Found out about the document, bought it, downloaded it, started reading it.  It is quite a read - at 109 pages long.

Note that as is the case of many of my projects, I am unable to simply provide the contents of the tutorials etc for copyright reasons naturally.  But for consistency - I will be doing EXACTLY what I am told to do.  Please bear this in mind.  As if you decide on this route, realistically, you MUST do the SAME!!! :)

The next entry here will list the immediate actions and requirements.

Requirements Discovered.
Traffic Travis - free download.
Pitfall - the doc tells us how to use astore which is amazons store builder, and also as another option to develop instead, it goes into a wordpress blog review type site.  I think the document agrees with me - I am going to completely avoid astore as its going to do nothing but create a load of duplicate content and will get any domain I create dumped from google faster than the New Horizons rocket just coming up on Pluto.  Bear this in mind folk - its a problem for affiliates - and a BIG ONE - NEVER EXPECT ANYTHING UNLESS YOU WRITE YOUR OWN COPY.  Anything less is a fudge.  PERIOD.

Ok - I am now up to the point where I can go off and buy a domain, set up the hosting and stick a wordpress blog on it.  There are a number of documented wordpress configurations in the document which I will follow to the letter.

Got a great domain name - good for branding a review site.......

Logo done.  Bought a graphic from dreamstime for a couple of dollars.  But it looks great.

Ok - hosting sorted - got a budget USA based host, uploaded a main page which has the logo, and click to enter.  Then, in a subdirectory, I have installed Wordpress.  The manual goes into quite a lot of detail now about a suggested configuration of wordpress, this will take a bit more time and also I have to choose a theme and insert the logo etc.  All the usual stuff but as I say - a number of tweaks to the raw install as per the guide need completing.

The site is now up and running - really messed around with a lot of templates before choosing one, and ended up with one which doesn't support schema.org review formats - you should really have one which does so the stars appear in the serps, but I believe I can add it to the headers down the line.  So the site is up, 4 reviews are in, doing more reviews now (note it's a cross the board review site - not a specialist single item micro site.  I thought I would go a bit further).

It could be said that this is not in the spirit of the document, however I see it as an opportunity to expand on the document.  The only pitfall I can forsee is a loss of ranking potential around the EMD aspect which is a worry, but I hope to overcome this with a few strong links.   I will repeat this ENTIRE project if I get nowhere with a generic review site (which I hope to gain brand awareness with over time).  And by repeat - I mean I will get another domain and build a micro niche blog instead as the doc suggests.

I have to add though, that in my experience a micro niche site tends not to convert very well - and thats selling things which I own the brand for aswell.  I feel at this point that I will have to do the micro niche site, but am satisfied with the decision to start with a large "review" site, as the products will still be sold by amazon - which is realistically the name of the game here - using their trust and brandname.

Todays job is to fill out the shell of the domain with the disclaimer, about us, contact us - all that sort of stuff.  I also need to sort out the header logo - it needs some fluff on it - making it look a little busier.

This project has taken on a life of its own!
I have set up a 100% new site from scratch by hand which targets red widgets - so for this, I have "redwidgetsreviews" dot com.  I have manually written and placed about 20 pages on it - loads of images and text, help guides and of course reviews.  I am lucky in that I have a highly respected website already about red widgets - so I have placed a link on that site to get g to see the new one.  It is left with around 10 review pages which need doing, the thumbs to the products are present on the index page (so half have reviews and half dont) - I was a bit concerned about presenting it to g like this, however it DOES give me the opportunity to add pages and get a fresh boost for the site as time goes on - if freshness is relevant for SEO.

Secondly, my WP site is up and running - however rather than stick with a niche site, I am going to develop a full blown multi category generic review site.  Still using the WP tips from the crash course videos - but adapting where required to allow for a huge website which will grow over time.

Both of these sites will be have amazon links placed on them - but due to my sceptisism about having them on every page (I feel this will get the sites demoted in rank) - I will be sparing and only place them on high traffic pages, and only one ad per one of those pages.  I have pages on other domains with amazon links on - and they have basically been dumped by g - even though the domains themselves (and pages on the domains) do very well in ranking terms.  More to follow.
