Amazon listings dominating google serps.

I've been doing a few product reviews recently, for a small project of my own, and I review stuff I bought myself for my own use.  Anyway, some of these things came from amazon, so naturally, google already has entries for the products in its serps.  My reviews tend to be more comprehensive than the guff you see on amazon, which typically tends to be more geared around what a person thought of a given item, rather than discussing the item itself in detail - which is fair enough.  Here is what you would expect from an amazon review - although there are a full range and some are fairly comprehensive.

"Hi - got it for my kid - battery won't charge and kid is really upset.  Returned item for refund".

or on a positive note, you may experience something as follows :-

"Bought it to go in my new car - works great and the support is excellent."

You get the gist?  These aren't really product reviews, they are buyer reviews - and there is often a huge difference.

Anyway - this doesn't matter to google - because if you search them for a product - and it doesn't have to be a massively popular product - here is the sort of drivel google will give you.  Obviously this is an actual example.

Google returning nothing but amazon on page 1

Out of a 245,000 serp - you can see that google sees fit to return 10 amazon pages.  The phrase doesn't include the word "review" - but the results for <product ...... review> are actually almost as bad, with the top 9 results being from amazon.

I see this as a huge problem for small business owners and website owners hoping to get a few views from the google search engine.

Basically - forget it.  Google shows amazon because thats what its algos do - and thats the end of it.  Not all serps are like this, but many are, so for anyone wishing to trade on their own properties (IE domains) - and not wanting to rely on amazon and their rules of play - google traffic is going to be hard to come by, because it all goes to amazon.

Now call me old fashioned, but I do believe the right hand serp to be absolute trash.  In my view, and not everyone will agree, google should only show one or two pages from the same domain on serp listings 1 through 10.  If fairness were a goal, then that is what they would do.  So is fairness a goal?  Why should it be?  It's googles engine etc etc etc.  I've heard it all before, even trumped up arguments like the "amazon pages are all the best ones".  What? Out of a 245,000 serp ONLY AMAZON deserves page 1?

Whatever googles reasons for this distinct display of Amazon DOMINATION - the fact remains that you will have to go up against amazon - no matter how big or small you are, and if you are small, then this will be almost impossible for you - because lets face it - you aint going to get many links to a reading glasses review page no matter how interesting you make it!!!

HEY - HOWS THIS FOR USER EXPERIENCE??????  LOL

Amazon Showing too much in google.

Really, the purpose of this article is to warn people to do their research first, because expecting to be able to top amazon listings with a new site is a no go.  Check your products first, if amazon is all over page 1 - as is the case above - just move on or prepare for a long hard struggle, because google is returning amazon like the case above proves.  What their motives are god only knows - but hey thats google for you.
